Florence Nightingale Clock Timed Charity Auction

1/05/2020     Latest News

We are very pleased to have been asked to sell a 19th Century repeating Carriage Clock, inscribed “M.E.S. from Florence Nightingale, 10th October 1887”, height 8ins, inclusive estimate £1,000 - £2,000.

The sale is a timed auction consisting of the single lot, closing at 12 noon on Friday, 22 May.

During the current Covid-19 crisis, the anonymous vendor wishes to donate all sale proceeds to St Richards Hospice in Worcester. The Director of Fundraising at St Richards Hospice has sadly lost her mother to Covid-19, which makes this generous donation especially poignant, as well as supporting all the dedicated carers and staff at the hospice.

The present owner of the clock inherited it from his cousin who was the great-niece of Miss Mathilde Schwabe. He thinks that Miss Schwabe may have received the clock from Florence Nightingale in recognition of some help she had given or work she had done. Both women had been interested in social reform, Miss Schwabe, only twenty-six at the time, having signed the 1866 Women's Suffrage petition.

There is no viewing possible, and no auction fees or buyers premium charged. We are very grateful to the Auction Technology Group who are hosting the sale and have agreed to waive their charges. The lot is subject to a reserve - and terms and conditions of sale.

The timed auction will close at 12 noon on Friday 22nd May. If you wish to bid please visit: https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auction-catalogues/philip-serrell/catalogue-id-srph10057/lot-defe5caf-0a5b-40a2-a82c-abac00ca7e24

or if you simply wish to make a donation to St Richards Hospice, this can be done through their webpage at www.strichards.org.uk/donate.

Thank you for you support - stay safe
