Philip Serrell has historically achieved good prices for oil paintings and watercolours. In our March Fine Art sale, a pair of oil paintings by Francesco Zanin made the top price in their category. Zanin, who signed his work Zanin Frani, produced Venetian landscapes and in this sale, the St Mark’s Square, Venice, and its companion, Rio dei Mendicanti, both measuring some 17ins x 25ins, created strong interest. A telephone bidder was successful in buying the lot, which was underbid by an internet bidder. The final hammer price was £62,000. From the same source, a watercolour by Basil Bradley entitled The Game Keeper, realised £1,800.
Malvern has always had a fond connection with Dame Laura Knight, and Philip Serrell through the years has sold a number of oil paintings and drawings by this, and other popular British artists. A beautiful drawing in this sale, dated 1956, was a portrait of a young girl, which had been a present to the sitter’s parents from the artist. Keen bidding again secured a hammer price of £2,800.
